No Sew Lavender Magic Bag

No Sew Lavender Magic Bag

For as long as I can remember my family had magic bags lying around the house. Whether it was because my mom is always cold, or because my dad has neck issues. We always had a variety of sizes around for everyone to use. I always loved using them after dance practice when I was super sore. Or on my stomach to help ease cramps during that time of the month. But my favourite use has always been to warn up my feet. I am always cold (I must take after my mom), so popping a magic bag into my bed at night has always helped warm my feet. That is why we have brought to you this super easy and cute no sew magic bag.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a heated blanket as well, but these seem to be a bit risky in our house. The dogs are a magnet to them, they have destroyed 2 king sized heated blankets. So now we only have twin sized ones and take them off the bed when they aren’t in use. But magic bags I don’t stress about leaving laying around. Especially because I put them under the covers when I am using them. The main thing I love most about magic bags is that over time they lose their heat. There is nothing like the initial heat when you are cold and want to warm up. But, after a while I get hot and no longer want to heat.

Lavender

Lavender Magic Bag

Many regular magic bags are not scented. However, we have deiced to make this no sew magic bag lavender scented. Lavender is great at promoting sleep, and let’s be real we could all use a little help with getting more sleep. Lavender is optional but I really love it. I find it soothing and nicer than an unscented bag. You can find dried lavender on amazon, it is not super expensive but it is also not cheap. However, the bag is fairly large and you can use it to make multiple, no sew magic bags. If you’re not a fan of lavender than just skip this step. Or add in another type of scent that is natural and can be heated in the microwave without ruining it.

Cotton Canvas Bags

You must use cotton to make these. Don’t get just any old bag and pop that into your microwave. I am warning you now, it must be 100% cotton, I don’t want to be responsible if you set your kitchen on fire. I purchased these 10×12 100% cotton canvas bags off amazon. They came in a pack of 25 and are reasonably priced. You will need 3 for this DIY, but you can always make multiple, no sew magic bags. Or use the left over bags for a number of things in your daily life. Who doesn’t need more bags? You can also create this DIY with larger or smaller bags, however I found that 10×12 was the perfect size for the microwave. But smaller ones would be great for little kids, or really small ones can be used as mitten warmers.

Materials for Magic Bag

So lets get into this DIY. It is so simple and easy to make no sew magic bags.

What You Will Need:

  • 3 Cotton Canvas Bags (10×12 inches)
  • 7 cups of Jasmine/White Rice
  • 1/2 cup Dried Lavender (optional)

No Sew Magic Bag Instructions

Step 1: In a large bowl measure out 7 cups of jasmine/white rice, and 1/2 cup of dried lavender. Mix together, until lavender is evenly distributed.

Step 2: Take one 100% cotton canvas bag and measure 3 3/4 cups of the lavender-rice mixture into it. Pour the remaining rice into a second 100% cotton canvas bag.

Step 3: Tie the bags off very securely. I pulled the strings as tight as they would go and then made a knot. Then I took the strings and wrapped them around the “neck” of the bag and made an additional knot. This is to prevent any of the rice from escaping. Repeat with the second rice filled bag.

Step 4: Roll up one of the bags, tucking the knotted opening underneath, so that it is hidden against the rice. Do this with the second rice bag. Place the bag with the tops/knotted opening facing each other. Place them into the third 100% cotton canvas bag. This makes it so that the knots are not hard against your skin when you use the bag, they are hidden in the rice.

Step 5: Tie off the outer bag with a knot or bow, and you are done. Heat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes until desired temperature and enjoy.

Decorating Your No Sew Magic Bag

If you wish to decorate your magic bag, you will need to do a bit of sewing. However this can be hand sewed. You will need some 100% cotton fabric and some thread. I have skipped this step since I am happy with the plain canvas bag since no one sees it in use anyways. However, if you’re making this for your child or as a gift, you can always add this next step to bring it to the next level. I will also note that I brainstormed multiple other options for decorating such as painting or using felt. But none of these options are safe due to them being flammable in a microwave. Using 100% cotton materials is the safest option.
