It’s the start of a new year and I’m sure for many that means ditching the junk and trying to eat healthier. While it is one of our goals to eat healthier and exercise more (anyone else?), I personally don’t plan on completely ditching the junk food. I love food, and I have never been the type to quit cold turkey. Eating gluten free is hard enough without limiting yourself in other aspects of your diet. But just because we are trying to eat healthier doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy delicious food. So if you’re trying to ditch the junk, maybe you will be interested in this Cherry Pie Smoothie. All the flavour without all the bad.

My Love for Pie

Cherry Pie brings back memories for me. When I was in high school, my school was out in the country surrounded by fields. If you went by the school today, you wouldn’t even believe that. There is a Walmart and a strip mall across the street. But believe me, there never used to be. The only thing back then that was within walking distance of the school was a pie shop.

Just a short distance down the road there was an apple orchard and in the fall they would sell pies. During lunchtime, my friends and I would walk down to this apple orchard and buy a couple pies. We would then bring them back to school, everyone would grab a fork and we would eat the pies. Obviously this was long before coronavirus and way before I was diagnosed with celiac disease. But these are fond memories of high school and made me love pie.

When I was first diagnosed with celiac disease, I found the transition very hard. I had a great support system but some foods I still craved. To this day I crave the odd food, usually donuts. However, I have very few cravings as time has gone on, and I have forgotten what many gluten containing foods taste like. But since I love pie thats one food I really miss.

Not long after my diagnosis I figured out that if you put oats in a smoothie it mimicked the taste of pie. So I started making cherry pie smoothies. To be honest, I usually add about 1/2-1 tsp of almond extract to this recipe. But there seems to be a shortage of almond extract in our area. We think that because of the virus and this current lockdown that our area is in, there have been shortages of some products. This recipe has been made without the almond extract and it tastes just as delicious.

This recipe calls for oats. Make sure that if you have celiac disease or are gluten free that you use gluten free certified oats. Oats are high risk for cross contamination and have to be certified to be safe. We usually buy the Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Old Fashioned Rolled Oats. A bag lasts us a long time and we use these oats in a few different recipes.

Now, enough of that. Let’s get into making the cherry pie smoothie. This recipe is super easy, just throw everything into a blender, blend until combined and cherries are blended in. Pour into a glass, put a literal cherry on top and pop a straw into the glass. And thats it! We hope that you enjoy this recipe as much as we do.
