Homemade Hot Chocolate (GF & Vegan)

Homemade Hot Chocolate Sideview

Homemade Hot Chocolate is nostalgic and cozy. It brings me back to being little and watching holiday movies with my family. This recipe we have created is rich and decadent. One cup is definitely enough, but you will want more because it is that good.

Gluten Free Hot Chocolate

Gluten free hot chocolate can be very hard to find in grocery stores. There are a couple big name brands that sell hot chocolate that has no gluten containing ingredients, but it is not certified gluten free. I have also come across some brands that have a may contain wheat statement due to shared manufacturing equipment.

To be on the safe side, it is just easier to make your own from scratch at home. This recipe is so simple and easy. Most people will have all of these ingredients at home already. Our recipe is also dairy free and vegan (skip the toppings). Like many people with Celiac Disease, I struggle to digest milk and some other dairy products so I avoid cows milk altogether. I only drink almond milk or coconut milk. Therefore, we have used Unsweetened Almond Milk in this recipe and it works great. However, if you are able to tolerate cows milk, go ahead and make this recipe with that.

Homemade Hot Chocolate in Bed

Make a Hot Chocolate Bar

This homemade hot chocolate is great if you’re just one person wanting a little treat before bed, or if you’re a family wanting it for a movie night. We’re all stuck at home these days which means if you have little ones you’re running out of ideas to keep them entertained. I am sure the holidays have helped a bit but like many, you are probably trying to recreate your family traditions in new ways. If you’re running out of new ideas to entertain your family, try out having a homemade hot chocolate bar.

This is a great activity to do with your whole family before a Christmas movie night, decorating the tree, while baking, or just any old cold winter night. Make a large batch of our homemade hot chocolate and then put out a spread of your favourite toppings. Whip cream, different shaped or flavoured marshmallows, sprinkles, cookie stir sticks, chocolates to melt in your cup, the options are endless. Let your littles create their own and see how creative they can be.

Homemade Hot Chocolate for One

Or if you don’t have any kids, if you’re one person or a couple just follow this recipe for a small batch. Since we are only two people in our house, a small batch does the trick and then we just top it with some whip cream or our Homemade Peppermint Marshmallows. We also love to have some Gluten Free Ginger Molasses Cookies on the side while enjoying our hot chocolate.

We hope that you enjoy this homemade hot chocolate recipe. Let us know how you dress it up and what your favourite toppings are. Don’t forget to check out some more gluten free treats under the Treats section in the menu.
